  17. Raptor is just the one of the first of a wave of multi-exotic-processor 
  18. Windows NT machines you will see hit in the coming year.  My advice is 
  19. to wait until Lightwave 4.0 for Windows actually releases to make a 
  20. purchasing decision, unless your needs are critical and near term.  
  21. Newtek announced it at SIGGRAPH, so I would hope they will have it by 
  22. the fall or early next year (Allen?).  This gives you several benefits:

  24. * You get Lightwave 4.0 which somebody at the Newtek booth said will 
  25. include the distributed renderer and the modeler, unlike today, when 
  26. you just get the distributed renderer.
  27. * You get WinNT 3.5 which should be out by then and has OpenGL support, 
  28. as well as being smaller, faster, and all around better.
  29. * You get to take advantage of the pricing wars as every company tries 
  30. to come out with a lower priced NT box.
  31. * Assuming Lightwave takes advantage of OpenGL, you get to see who 
  32. comes out with low-priced OpenGL hardware acceleration and add that to the mix.
  33. * Depending on which processors Lightwave has native support for, and 
  34. which ones NT has been released for, that adds flexibility to your 
  35. price/performance decision, as you may be able to choose freely between 
  36. Pentium, MIPS, Alpha, and PowerPC (and who knows what else)?

  38. Of course, if you're down in the trenches today, Raptor is an excellent 
  39. choice for the here and now.  At SIGGRAPH, Deskstation was showing the 
  40. Raptor II - I don't know what relationship this has to the Raptor, but 
  41. it would be worth finding out about.

  43. For my own hard-earned money, and since I'm basically a hobbyist 
  44. (meaning I can wait), I'm not going to buy anything without multiple 
  45. CPU capability (even if I just get one to start) and a PCI bus so I can 
  46. add standard peripherals.

  48. Now if Newtek would just come out with a PCI Flyer we'd all be in Hog Heaven.
